series launch: January 2018

The Senior Quiz (SQ) provides entertainment and mental stimulation for senior citizens in residential care, day centres and social clubs, or at home. It is a general knowledge quiz, but the content is more appropriate to an older generation (e.g. more Bing Crosby than Dizzee Rascal) and it is structured to be more accessible by needing less 'memory power' than other quizzes.   Questions  typically use graphic photo images which help to stimulate memory, and the questions themselves are often in a multiple-choice format: therefore they depend on recognition of the answer, rather than recall from scratch, a much easier task. The SQ is an entertainment as well as a stimulus to thinking and memory. By conjuring up the sights and sounds of an earlier era, it encourages people's reminiscence and nostalgia which are of proven therapeutic value to the elderly.  It is offered fortnightly, or weekly if there is sufficient demand.

In addition to the SQ, there is a quiz for those in the early stages of dementia, the SQed. It is a simpler version of the SQ, and it is also published fortnightly. The growing numbers of dementia patients requires some extra provision of activity and stimulation, and while these will not be practicable for all, those whose dementia is not yet too far advanced can enjoy the SQed: perhaps not so much as a quiz but as a memory aid and a basis for conversation, anecdote and discussion.

Both the SQ and the SQed are arranged in two distinct halves so that they can be easily split for use in two different sessions.  Prospective subscribers can trial these quizzes, simply clicking on the forward arrow in each case (below, left). The questions are timed exposures but they can be paused by using the video controls which appear when the cursor is run over the screen image.

HOW TO PLAY A QUIZ

1) DOWNLOAD IT TO YOUR COMPUTER (recommended option)

This way you get a copy of the quiz saved on your computer, so you can review it or use it anytime with friends or for social events or fundraising. Because you are not using it 'live' off the internet there is no risk of signal problems. All you need to do is click on the         symbol in the top left-hand corner of the quiz cover; then click on the Download arrow          in the centre of the image.  That's it, the quiz  can now be clicked on from the Downloads section of your laptop/PC when you want to play it. You can control the quiz (start, pause, volume) using the controls that appear when you pass the cursor over the surface of the image.

 2) PLAY IT DIRECT FROM THIS WEBSITE:

Just click on the forward arrow          in the centre of the images, above right. Make the picture as big as you want by clicking on the image and dragging the 'handles' at the corner.  Or go to Full Screen by clicking on the arrow symbols        (top right, when you have moved  the cursor over the image to reveal the video controls).   This option is not advised where the broadband signal is weak or very variable: use option 1 instead.

3) WATCH IT ON DVD available monthly from Q&A: this month's quizzes, all on a single DVD
